Valerie Shaw is a Los Angles-based journalist. In the mid-1980s, Shaw created a retrospective called “Black Hollywood Yesterday,” the goal of which was to recognize early Black contributions to Hollywood film. The main event of the retrospective was a seminar at the University of Southern California (USC), where many of the figures in early Black film were invited to speak. The Valerie Shaw collection consists of materials related to her work with the Black Hollywood Yesterday retrospective. The main bulk of the collection consists of footage from the Black Hollywood Yesterday Seminar, a school presentation, and promotional materials and interviews from the time. Additionally, there are excerpts of Lorenzo Tucker in The Black King, which is referenced throughout.
