J. Ronald Green is a researcher and professor emeritus at the Ohio State University, where he studied and taught film history and theory. As an advisor to the National Black Programming Consortium, Dr. Green successfully advocated for the creation of new courses on Black cinema at Ohio State. In addition to numerous scholarly journal articles, Dr. Green has contributed extensive research into the life of pioneering Black director Oscar Micheaux. His book Straight Lick: The Cinema of Oscar Micheaux (2000) was, at its time of publication, the most complete overview of Micheaux’s work available. His follow-up, With a Crooked Stick: The Films of Oscar Micheaux (2004), offers critical analyses of fifteen of Micheaux’s surviving films, as well as examination into the sociopolitical conditions endured by Black American artists during the 1920s and 1930s. The J. Ronald Green Collection assembles materials accumulated by Dr. Green during his years of research into Micheaux. These include drafts, correspondences, and research notes, in addition to primary documents like press clippings on Micheaux’s work and Micheaux family genealogical documents.
