The General Collection
The General Collection is an artificially created collection of commercial materials produced by, featuring, or documenting the work of Black filmmakers and performers. The materials were acquired through a mix of private donations and purchases by the BFCA to advance the study and awareness of the work of international Black film artists.
The collection consists of over 3000 film and television titles from more than 40 countries in a variety of audiovisual formats such as DVD, VHS, Betacam, film, and laserdisc. It also has an international collection of publicity materials such as production stills, posters, lobby cards, press kits, and press books; and a reference collection of scholarship on African American, African, Caribbean, Middle Eastern, Diasporic, and European cinemas covering such genres and movements as race filmmaking, Afro-futurism, Afro-surrealism, L.A. Rebellion, Hollywood, Nollywood, Blaxploitation, Pan-African, experimental, feminist, and queer cinemas, among many others.
