The Elizabeth Mitchell and David Gudaitis Collection contains paper, audiovisual recordings, and 3D objects related to the life and professional activities of historian, producer, playwright, collector, and civic leader Elizabeth Mitchell and producer, director, cinematographer, and filmmaker David Gudaitis.
Elizabeth Mitchell (1953- ) is a multi-award winning journalist, historian, playwright, producer, and community leader in Bloomington, Indiana. Her work largely focuses on uncovering, documenting, and sharing African American history with the community through theatrical performances, documentaries, and segments on public television and radio. She has also contributed to the preservation of this history by identifying historical sites, advocating for historical markers, and amassing the largest collection of African-American memorabilia in Monroe County. She is one of the founding members of Bring It On, a radio show for WFHB Public Radio Station. In 2016, Mitchell partnered with director Danielle Bruce and playwright Gladys DeVane to create Resilience Productions, a theatrical production company that operates as part of the Racial Justice Task Force of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Bloomington.
David Gudaitis, Ph.D. (1953- ) is a producer, videographer, director, and filmmaker who spent several years as a senior editor and producer in commercial film and video production before moving into the field of instructional video. Gudaitis Productions is a documentary and educational film production company created c. 2010 by David Gudaitis, Alan Backler, and Larry Laswell. Since its formation, the company has produced many films, including And Justice for All: Indiana's Federal Courts (2017), which was nominated for two Emmy awards. In 2019, Elizabeth Mitchell began partnering with Gudaitis Productions on several of their films, serving as producer for Rev. Marvin Chandler: Open to the Moment (2019); director and producer for Reviving the West Baden Church: A Labor of Love (2023); and co producer, co-videographer, and finance manager for A Generation at War: The Civil War Era in a Northern Community (2025).
